Which Air Conditioner is the Quietest?

In Houston, Texas it is always important to keep you and your family nice and cool during those hot and humid summer months.  So when you are left to search for a new air conditioning system or purchasing a new one for your newly built home, finding the right one is important.

Not only is it important to find a AC system that properly cools your home as well as help keep your energy bill low, but having one that does not create a horrible and loud racket is a need as well.  Especially if you have little ones that take naps during the day and tend to be light sleepers.

When it comes to comparing different units, there is a section called decibel (dB) that is the sound rating.  The lower the number, the quieter the unit runs.  There is a simple way to break down just exactly how loud that means.

When it comes to a unit that is around 80 dB, think of turning on your garbage disposal and it is grinding up a bunch of food and such.  Now think of a unit that is around 70 dB, especially the higher 70’s, think of vacuuming your carpet.

Then if you see some that are around 60 dB you can compare this to when you are at a restaurant and there are lots of different conversations going on.  Finally, ones that are around 50 dB are similar to having a quiet conversation in your home.

This just all gives you a general idea of what the sound level would be for each section of the dB levels.  Now when you compare levels of dB, you will have a better idea of exactly how loud each one can be.

As of 2015, the lowest range for dB usually runs about 50-60 dB, which is pretty low.  American Standard Platinum CX25 and Trane XV18 both run at 55 dB, which is one of the lowest.

When it comes to pricing for quiet units, the quieter it is the more expensive and this is because these are usually more energy efficient.  The one thing is that helps determine the sound rating is the size of the AC unit, which is measured in tons as well as if the fan is running at its lowest setting.

That means that in the great state of Texas, with all of its humidity and also if you have a rather large home, your unit will more than likely be louder than the sound rating that is advertised.  Though keep in mind that if you want a quiet unit, choosing one that is between 50 and 60 dB will be much quieter than those higher than that.  If you did chose one that was higher, it will be even higher than what is advertised as well.

There are specific features to keep in mind that help reduce the sound.  One that has a fan that has various speeds, the insulation for the compressor, if it has noise-reducing fan blades, and if the base pan is insulated.  If you cannot find the dB rating, check for these and if these are included then it should be one of the quieter AC systems.
