If you’re living in Spring Texas and planning a new heater installation, knowing what to expect when having a new furnace installed will ensure you’re getting everything that was promised at time you made the investment. Experts say knowing what to expect will settle any concerns. Homeowners should gather information upfront as well as an agreement with the contractor before getting started.

Why Does My Heater Smell Like It’s Burning

Why Does My Heater Smell Like It’s Burning

While you may not need to use your heater much during the the colder months in Houston, TX, it’s good to be prepared with a reliable heating system for the weeks where the temperatures drop low. Unfortunately, after sitting unused for months at a time, you may notice an unexpected and unpleasant surprise when you go to turn on your heater. A burning smell coming from your electric heater, furnace, or heat pump is a common worry, but generally is not a cause for alarm. Most often, if your heater smells like it’s burning, it because of one of the following reasons:

Heater Smells Like Burning Dust: Dust that has accumulated on your heater throughout the warm spring and summer, tend to be the most common source of a burning smell from your heater. Whether you operate an electric heater, furnace, or heat pump, a system that has remained dormant can collect dust and other particles from the air in your home. When the heating system is turned on, these materials burn up, causing that short-lived burning dust smell. While you don’t need to contact the fire department, you should take a look just to be sure that there isn’t another source of the smell. You may notice that as the system completes a heating cycle, the odor fades. If it continues after one or two heating cycles, contact Autumn Air for an inspection of your unit.

Heater Smells Like Burning Plastic: Occasionally, rubber, plastic, or other materials end up working their way inside of the ductwork, through air vents. If you smell a burning plastic smell or burning rubber smell that is not consistent throughout your house, try to isolate the location. Inspect the air vents in the area that has a strong burning odor to make sure that there isn’t an obstruction. Just make sure you don’t close your vents because this can affect the balance of your HVAC system and reduce its efficiency. If this doesn’t remedy the burning smell, contact the experienced HVAC technicians at Autumn Air for help.

Holiday Season Heating Tips To Preserve Energy

Holiday Season Heating Tips To Preserve Energy

The holidays are a busy time for most families, bringing more guests into your home than normal. With cold weather, extra cooking, and lots of guests you will quickly notice that all of this is going to impact your energy costs.

Below are a few easy tips that can help you reduce your energy costs during the holiday season:

Keep the oven closed when cooking: We know you want to check on that Thanksgiving Turkey and Christmas ham while it fills your home with a delicious aroma, but every time you open the oven door the oven’s temperature drops as much as 25 degrees costing you more in electricity than you have to spend for the same results. Put off checking whatever it is your baking before you know that it has the potential to be fully cooked. When it is time to check on your food, make it quick and try to use the

Match pan size to burner size: When using your stove top this holiday season, make sure that the pans or pots you are heating up fit on the burner. If you place a small six-inch pan on an eight-inch burner, you’re going to end up losing a lot of heat. Conversely, if you place an eight-inch pan on a six-inch burner, it’s going to take much longer than usual to heat your food up.

Only Use Dishwasher When Full: The dishwasher will actually use less water than if you wash dishes by hand – and if you have guests over, the last thing you want to do is spend all day washing their dishes anyway. Just make sure you only run the dishwasher when there is a full load – and if you rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, rinse them using cold water. Hot water takes up a lot of energy to heat.

Insulate Your Attic: The holiday season will bring low temperatures and heavy winds, insulate your attic to make sure your home’s heat doesn’t escape your house when temperatures drop during this season. Doing this will help keep heat concentrated inside your home, and also will help keep you and your guests warm and comfortable.

Schedule a heating inspection with Autumn Air: You don’t want your heating system breaking down in the middle of a family meal, nor do you want your heating system working so inefficiently that your heating bills are astronomical this season. Have your furnace inspected (or heat pump, depending on your heating system) before the holidays hit so you can repair any issues before they become costly. Autumn Air is here to help you host your guests comfortably and stay warm all season long.

Air conditioners alll use the same core technologies to cool the indoor air in your space. The refrigeration cycle begins when low-pressure refrigerant enters the compressor and exits as a high-pressure gas. This gas flows into the condensing coil where the action of the fan dissipates heat and transforms the refrigerant into a high-pressure liquid. The indoor blower pulls warmer indoor air across the evaporator coil, and the heat energy is absorbed by the refrigerant. This then results in cooler air being pushed back into the living air through the supply duct.

Heating System Check-Up in Spring TX

Heating System Check-Up in Spring TX

Improved Heating Function

A natural effect of time on your heating and air conditioning system is a loss of efficiency. There are many factors that lead to a loss of efficiency including dust and dirt buildup, wear and tear over time, and other buildup in your unit’s drains or even on burners.

Keeping your heating system well maintained with regular professional tune-ups from Autumn Air can go a long way to reducing these factors. During your heating tune-up, our heating maintenance technician will thoroughly clean and check your heating equipment, identifying areas that have been worn down or affected. We work to identify failing parts in need of replacement before they become a more serious problem.

A tune-up alone has the potential to instantly improve energy efficiency in your unit. In addition to improving your efficiency you will also enjoy higher air quality and a cleaner space because your HVAC system will be distributing air through a clean air filter. One of the most enjoyable benefits you will get to enjoy after a fall furnace or AC tune-up is decreased cost in your utility bills. A neglected HVAC system is forced to work much harder to heat and cool your home, while a furnace or air conditioner that has been finely tuned requires less energy to maintain indoor comfort. Because your heating system will function more efficiently, it will deliver superior heating at lower cost than you otherwise may have had through the winter season.

A Longer-Lasting HVAC System

The goal of having your home or business’s HVAC system inspected and tuned-up is to save costs down the road and to get the longest life out of your systems. If you have not had your unit inspected in the last year contact Autumn Air today. We will go over your options for a tune-up this fall!

Benefits of Fall AC Maintenance in Houston

Benefits of Fall AC Maintenance in Houston

Air Conditioning equipment should always be inspected, cleaned and serviced at least once a year.  However, experts say for optimum efficiency this should happened twice a year. Ideally, Fall and Spring.  Most homeowners have their AC systems checked in the spring. However, in the southern areas of Texas particularly, the Houston Areas, homeowners have found the extended high temperatures have fostered the need for biannual check-ups of Air Conditioning systems.  Bi annual check-ups (Fall and Spring) prepare your Air Conditioning Systems for the proceeding seasons, which are generally the harshest for heating and cooling systems.

Having your unit serviced in fall presets the service in preparation of winter and spring with summer. Most Air conditioning equipment whether electric or gas, hot or cold push air through the same systems throughout the year.  Air Conditioning systems generally have no relief throughout the seasons. In southern states, seasons of warm weather last much longer than the northern states.

With a fall service check-up, HVAC technicians provide a checklist of all the tasks to be performed just as during the spring check-up. HVAC technicians arrive with a long checkpoint list of service tasks to perform during the maintenance call.   Utilizing special equipment, technicians check for refrigerant leaks. They also perform other routine tasks, which include cleaning indoor and outdoor coils, place oil in motor parts and inspect the fan blower found inside the home. Belts that are used to keep the motor of blower circulating are checked for wear.

Additionally, technicians check the thermostat for proper registration and identification of actual temperature. This is essential in any type of climate. If the thermostat does not work efficiently, more energy could be used. Ultimately increasing your energy bill. If needed, technicians will also recharge the refrigerant. Other routine tasks include cleaning both indoor and outdoor coils, oiling motor parts, inspecting the fan blower, testing the thermostat and replacing any worn belts. Fall is also the opportune time for technicians to troubleshoot and repair small issues before larger ones develop.

Experts say, choosing to have your air conditioner checked prior to the winter shutdown and/or prior to spring re-crank is a personal decision.  However, most responsible homeowners understand the need to savor their investment versus experiencing costly repairs due to lack of maintenance. The important point is that homeowners enlist the help of an air conditioning professional who can provide a maintenance contract for very little investment. By having your AC system checked in the fall, your unit receives much needed cooling coil checks from the blistering summers of the Houston area where 100-degree temperatures last until mid September.

Your refrigerant is replaced after high usage during the summer months. You will keep your unit operating efficiently and increase the lifespan of the unit up to 30 percent. It will also help you avoid frequent breakdowns and the need for costly repairs.

Fall is an ideal time to service in our area.  Unlike in the Northern States, We generally use our AC Systems throughout the year. Autumn Air has licensed technicians to address any needs.   Protect your AC Systems from Houston’s sweltering summer in our extended months. Contact Autumn Air for your Fall AC Check-up. Houston Thermostat Settings

Houston Thermostat Settings

Many people in Houston have questions and concerns when it comes to their thermostat questions. You may be unsure of what average temperature settings are and how to maintain a an electricity bill that does not completely destroy your budget.

So at what temperature should you set your thermostat?

-Normal cooling settings in the spring and summer are somewhere between 75 degrees to 80 degrees. While many people with older units or unserviced units will need to go lower in order to get their home to feel cool.

-Normal heating settings in the fall and winter are somewhere between 68 degrees to 72 degrees. If your unit is old or does not have well established routes for the air to flow through you may find this is not warm enough to get the home comfortable.

Whenever you are looking to pinch pennies and stay within a budget, you should consistently set your thermostat to the highest possible temperature that is comfortable for you in the summer, and the lowest temperature you are comfortable with during the winter. Whenever you choose to do this you will maximize your energy savings. This is because on average every 1 degree of temperature change is equal to about 10% energy savings. So as an example, whenever you change your thermostat setting from 75 degrees to 76 degrees in the summer, this could result in saving you about 10% on your cooling costs.

Should I turn my thermostat up during the summer and down during the winter while I am away for the day?

Yes, adjusting your thermostat while you are away is a great way to conserve money. However, the Department of Energy suggests a change of no more than 3 degrees either direction if you want to maximize potential energy savings. Maintaining this 3 degree maximum change is very important because if you allow your home to get warmer/colder than this, it will result in your air conditioning or heating unit having to work extra hard to return your home back to the proper comfortable temperature when you get home. This period of extra hard work for the unit will completely eliminate all the cost you saved throughout the day and will actually now cost you more overall. This will reflect negatively on your bill and will give you less time in a comfortable space. This is especially true in the hot Texas summer months. If you were to turn your air conditioner completely off while you were at work and then the temperature in your home rises 5 degrees , when you finally return back to your home and crank down the thermostat your unit will now have to work very hard to remove all the extra heat in the home, and it has to do it during the hottest time of the day. This results in huge energy usage and cost.

What should I leave my thermostat set at if I am away for an extended time, such as on vacation?

Whenever you go out of town for more than a few days at a time, it is recommend to adjust your temperature no more than 5 degrees from your normal setting. Whenever you adjust it more than 5 degrees this can cause damage to the contents of the home, especially in the summer when we are dealing with extremely hot temperatures. Wood floors, cabinets, pets, electronics, etc. are all items that are sensitive to large temperature changes.

Best Time To Schedule Your Air Conditioner Maintenance in Houston

Best Time To Schedule Your Air Conditioner Maintenance in Houston

There is always a lot of uncertainty surrounding when and how often an air conditioning system should have regular maintenance performed on it. By a general rule of thumb, an air conditioning system should have, minimally, one tuneup performed annually. Now in an environment such as Houston, where the weather stays hot and humid for the bulk of the year, you will be using your home or business’s air conditioning unit heavily. This means, you have the potential to greatly benefit from more than one air conditioner tuneup a year.

An air conditioning tuneup is designed to check on all of the essential functions and parts of your air conditioning system. This is done to make sure that if there is a problem with your air conditioner, it is caught early on, before the problem can lead to a high end repair, or a full blown replacement.

The best analogy for why you need to have your air conditioner serviced is this: Your air conditioner is a complex machine that relies on many different parts to work in harmony together in order to properly function, much like a vehicle. If you were to buy a new vehicle, and drive that vehicle every single day without ever changing the oil or having your vehicle inspected, it would not take long for your to start having a serious problem. Your lights would go out, your oil would be completely used and you vehicle would start to operate less efficiently. You would not only notice a severe decline in the performance of your vehicle, you would greatly decrease the lifespan of your vehicle.

The best time of the year to have your air conditioner serviced for general maintenance and a tune-up would be right before the warm spring season and right after summer. This is because as you approach spring, in Houston, this means you are approaching the beginning of warm weather. While spring may be a mild season in most climates, that is not the case in Houston. After summer is also a great time to schedule you air conditioner maintenance because your unit will have been working long days and nights to keep your home cool during the blistering heat of summertime. Whenever you decide is best for you to have your unit serviced, contact Autumn Air! We have decades of experience servicing the Greater Houston area and have the knowledge and tools required to ensure you are getting the most out of your home or business’s air conditioning system! Let us help you save money and maximize the lifespan of your cooling system with regular maintenance and tuneups you can count on!

Poor Air Conditioning Can Damage Your Home

Poor Air Conditioning Can Damage Your Home

When you live in a climate like the one in Houston you get pretty used to these long hot and humid days. We all know that in the deep summer heat, retreating into the cool comfort of your home and relaxing in front of an air conditioner is your best chance at escaping the heat!

However, something you might not know about your homes air conditioning system is that it is not only protecting you and your family from the heat, it is also protecting your home! That’s right, when your home is exposed to the extreme conditions that come along with a southern summer, it can actually become damaged from the moist conditions.

Humidity has the ability to warp the wood in your home. This means paneling, doorways, flooring, wooden stairs, cabinets, built-ins, bookcases, wooden instruments, and even wooden furniture can become vulnerable to warping when not kept in a cool and dry space. This can be devastating to a homeowner because the only way to fix a home with warped wood is to completely remove the damaged wood and replace it. In a home with its original wood fixtures this can completely destroy its vintage charm and old school appeal. Additionally, this kind of damage will add up to be a budget breaking expense quickly!

Another problem with homes that do not have properly functioning air conditioning is that they are much more likely to become infested with mold and mildew. Not only will mold and mildew eat away at your home, it is also problematic for your health. Living with mold and mildew can lead to you suffering from respiratory issues, becoming very ill, or developing lifelong conditions that negatively impact your health.  Having mold removed from a home can also become extremely expensive and the process for removal is typically long and tedious.

Both moisture damaged wood and mold infestations can come with a very strong and unpleasant scent that will fill your home. These problems both come with expensive solutions and may even result in permanent or long term damages. Do not gamble with the safety of your family’s health or the condition of your home.
